Another notable signing... Kaelan Riley inks with North Greenville on early signing dayCONGRATS TO Kaelan & the Riley Family. I hope he does big things for the Crusaders & has a ball doing them! I believe Kaelan’s Dad lives in the GVL area and his Mom was a hoops star for the Clemson Tigers, so he should be at home in The Upstate.

Parker Wroble RB/WR 5-10 175 Hoschton, GA Mill Creek HS Yep - looks like the Bears added a 7th signee this morning... Looks like Wroble is a Transfer from Air Force, a 2020 signee for the Falcons, who Mercer previously recruited / offered out of Mill Creek High. Coming out of HS, Wroble had offers from Mercer, Coastal Carolina, Ball State, Army, Miami (OH), South Alabama, WCU, EKU, Wofford, The Citadel, and Tennessee Tech. Could end being a nice Offensive piece for Mercer.

FUBear, how well-suited do you think he is to Mercer’s offense? Looks like he’s used to throwing it a ton.

FUBear, how well-suited do you think he is to Mercer’s offense? Looks like he’s used to throwing it a ton. I really can’t answer that. Probably the best answer I can give is that I think we saw the 1st page or 2 of Coaches Cronic’s/Bodine’s/Foster’s Offensive Playbook this Fall. With Mr. Payton & (hopefully) with the return of Robert Riddle, I think we’ll see a couple more chapters of it. The bigger & more interesting questions (with some thoughts to support those questions) to me are: 1) Will Riddle be healed and 100% 2) How many years of eligibility do Payton & Riddle have remaining. With Covid exemptions, Redshirting, (possible) Medical Hardship, and Transferring involved in that calculus, I’ll let someone who knows calculus tell me the actual answer to that question. 3) My guess is that they both have 2, maybe 3, years remaining and they both are about the same eligibility-wise. 4) As Payton was CCU’s back-up in 2020 and played in 9 games (leading the Beach Chickens in their win over GaSou when McCall was injured), is he eligible to play Spring of 2021? If so, how many games? 5) Payton started @ CCU until McCall came in and set the world on fire...his journey there is somewhat akin to Kaelan Riley’s at Mercer. 6) I’m almost sure Payton isn’t transferring to Mercer planning to back-up Riddle or change positions. He could have done either of those things @ CCU. 7) I’m sure Riddle is not planning to back-up anyone when he’s fully healed. He’s demonstrated an NFL-quality arm & accuracy, if not, always, NFL-quality decision-making (unless we put “Favre” on the back of his jersey). But, due to injuries, he’s still pretty ‘green.’ He also has NFL size and has demonstrated he can be a fleet & elusive (if not durable) runner with the ability to execute the zone-read option quite deftly. 8) So...can BOTH play (coexist)...and stay (assuming Riddle is healed)? The good news is these are ‘FBS QB-type’ “problems.” Many FCS Teams would salivate to have just 1 QB even close to as good as either of these 2 have demonstrated they CAN be. It’s gonna be fun to watch...and fun to see how either/both of them are deployed when the whole O is installed.

The Bears seem to have a problem at QB, consistent with all successful programs....it is called depth. Yes and No... From 2013-2016, Mercer had no depth issues @ QB because John Russ was talented, tougher than nails & (almost) unbreakable. I think he got his “bell rung” early in the game @ Marist - the only ‘bad’ game of his career, but other than that one he was MONEY every week for 4 years. No depth needed...no problem. In 2017, Kaelan Riley started & finished all 11 games & was SoCon FR of the year. No depth needed...no problem 2018 - 2019 - this period is the “Yes” and “No” part - No because the Bears had an outstanding Starting QB in Robert Riddle & a more-than-capable award-winning back-up in Riley...but 1st Riddle & then Riley also got hurt...both years, I believe...and “Yes”...there was, then, definitely, a depth problem. 2020 - abbreviated ‘season’ - Riddle still out recovering from his 2019 injury & Riley was in the Transfer Portal...so, “Yes” depth @ QB was an issue...but it really was an exhibition season...so, how much did it matter...really? 2021 Spring ‘real’ season (if it happens)...who knows? QB depth could be GREAT or non-existent...with many variables determining which. But, I understand your point, quality back-ups don’t want to ‘sit’ at all...so they transfer now...instead of ‘waiting their turn.’..thus...almost every Team has a QB depth problem... I would have to think, IF there is any way Mercer can keep Riddle & Payton around for 2 (or 3) years, QB depth will not really be an issue...based on what I’ve seen from those 2 ability-wise. Even if both of them were to be injured (as happened to the Bears in ‘18 & ‘19), I think Peavy (if he stays) has a lot of potential. And, we haven’t even seen Fromm (if he stays) on the field yet. He was definitely a WINNER, at a relatively high level of GA HS Football. But, yeah, recruiting, keeping, and developing QB’s is a very difficult challenge in college football in these times.
