Missing wide open receivers. Half and half whose fault it is. Big step down from last year at QB.

Our special teams is just destroying us this year. FUBeAR called it the very first game. The long snapping is just bad. If it isn't just slow, it's low and slow. We've already had like 3 kicks blocked this year? And then that one where it's so low the punter can't even field it. I just don't get it. Those guys do one thing. ONE THING.

The Furman game, time after time, the defense was put into TERRIBLE spots. If I played for this defense, I'd be really pissed at the other units

Well, we did have a Walter Payton Award watch list QB last year with 4 years of game experience. It makes a difference.

The QB play was awful. The OL play was awful. The special teams play is awful. Not sure why we don’t get #1 and #13 more involved. Defense tackling is awful.

The QB play was awful. The OL play was awful. The special teams play is awful. Not sure why we don’t get #1 and #13 more involved. Defense tackling is awful. FUBeAR sees it a little differently… On Run Blocking - Way more often than not, the 5 Offensive Linemen block 5 Defensive Players…then the ball is run at 2-3 unblocked Defensive Players … ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ On Pass Blocking - Way more often than not, the 5 Offensive Linemen seem to (decently) block their assigned man…and sometimes 2 OLmen seem ‘totally committed‘ to blocking the same Defensive Player. So, 3-5 Defensive Players are blocked and 1-3 others are running free, chasing the QB Either the OL is making dozens of mental errors every game OR the schemes make no sense to FUBeAR. The blocking schemes may make sense within the overall context of this Offense which FUBeAR, admittedly, does not really know, but it just does not seem effectively reliable at this point. The execution of the OLmen is actually usually pretty good. They did, obviously, miss John Thomas today though. Tackling in modern Football is AWFUL. That is the level of the bar. Mercer tackled AWFUL MINUS against Ole Miss, but FUBeAR has seen the tackling as much improved since then. Didn’t see bad tackling as the problem today. The Bears held the Mocs to a third under their previous YPA Rushing and around 80% of their Total Offense. Letting the opponent cross the goal line only once in 3 straight conference games in modern Football is almost an unheard of achievement. The Defense and bad tackling bear almost no responsibility for the loss to Chatt. Also… MER - Receiving # Player Rec. Yds. TD Long13 James,Ty 6 135 1 32 1 Harper,Devron 7 99 0 28 + 1 rush each… 15 touches…about 25% of Mercer’s plays…(for ~234 yards and a TD) is pretty darn “involved.” FUBeAR will agree that the Offense needs to involve the 2 of them earlier. There seems to be an urgency to score later or when well behind in games that is not there until those points are reached. FUBeAR, an OLD Offensive Player & Coach, has just always felt that an Offense should play every series as if they may never have another opportunity to touch the ball and that leaving the field without scoring a TD is a sin. A FG is just a lesser sin. FUBeAR hears a lot of Coaches - not necessarily Mercer’s - saying these days that ending a series in a kick (including a punt) is the goal. If they are trying to say we don’t want to have turnovers, that’s fine…that’s what they should say, but Punting is NOT a good result for an Offense. It is a failure…not a complete and total failure like a turnover is, but a failure nonetheless.

It is a failure…not a complete and total failure like a turnover is, but a failure nonetheless. I agree with this 100%. The offense’s job should be to score, and score a bunch. I have said it all year, there are two dynamic playmakers on the team that need to get the ball distributed to them more frequently. The upfront blocking is not terrible, but I believe the scheme is causing a majority of the issue. It is designed to put man you with shifts and misdirections, however at this level it is very difficult to do that. I’ve watched a bunch of D2 games the past two years, one athletic guy can truly make a huge difference. It works. But at the FCS and higher levels you have to be more two dimensional. The reason our pass numbers take off in the end of the game are either because we have gotten the play action established or the defense is far enough ahead they are in a prevent type alignment. I’m not a coach, or did I stay at a Holiday Inn, but I do know mixing the pass in earlier will free up the running game. This offense has not been very successful at the higher than D2 level, they were actually more committed to “playing basketball” on turf last year and it worked. Playoffs are probably out this year, and that is a shame with the talent they have. I may be way off, but I believe this is a good team and a slight change in mindset and scheme could help. My opinions of course.
